Free School Meals Eligibility Changes

From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the DfE are expanding FSM eligibility to all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit regardless of household earnings. Free school meals are available to pupils in receipt of, or whose parents are in receipt of, one or more of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

A pupil is only eligible to receive a free school meal where both:

  • a claim for this support has been made
  • their eligibility has been verified by the school where they are enrolled or by the local authority

Households may also be entitled to a meal if they:

  • are in receipt of income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • receive the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • meet criteria set out in separate guidance for families with no recourse to public funds

All current FSM eligibility is to be re-assessed in line with the above criteria. If the claim does not meet the criteria, the ability to claim a free school meal will expire at the end of the current academic year. From 1st September 2026, only families that have the above listed benefits will be eligible.

If your child is currently at The Hub School and in receipt of Free School Meals, eligibility re-assessment will be done automatically in line with the criteria described above. Your eligibility will continue from 1st September 2026, unless you are notified by the Local Authority that you are no longer eligible.

If your child will be attending school in September and you have not yet applied for free school meals but think you may meet the criteria, please visit the East Riding Council website to apply.

School Meal Vouchers

We will be using Wonde to send FSM Vouchers during the summer holidays. If you are issued a supermarket voucher, please see the FAQs below:

Does my school offer free school meal vouchers through Wonde?

Yes, you should have either been notified directly by us via our Newsletter and text message alerts.  You will receive one of the following:

  • Text message from ‘SchoolMeals’
  • Email from ‘vouchers@wonde.com
  • Postal voucher (if this is your preferred method)

I’m yet to receive a text or email to choose my supermarket choice.

It is likely the vouchers have not been assigned yet or your details may be wrong in the school’s system. If you have any queries, please contact us directly.

I have made my supermarket choice, but I’m yet to receive my voucher.

There may be a number of reasons for this such as:

  • If you selected your supermarket choice after 12pm that day, your voucher will arrive the following day.
  • You made your supermarket choice after 12pm on a Friday. You’ll receive your voucher on Monday.

When do the vouchers expire?
Vouchers expire after 12 months of issue, other than Tesco which is 5 years.  Parent’s can also contact the customer service number on the voucher for an update

My Asda voucher doesn’t show the full amount when I view it on my phone or email.

You can check your balance by following this link https://cards.asda.com/.

Can I use the voucher online?

Asda are the only supermarket that currently allow vouchers to be used online.  This is due to the supermarket systems.  We appreciate that parents may prefer these to be an option moving forward, and we can update you when this can be an option.

If I don’t spend the whole voucher, can I keep using it until all has been allocated to a purchase?

Yes, this is correct.  If you would like to spend more than the voucher total in one shop then you can pay the remaining balance by another method (i.e. debit card).

What happens if I have multiple children at the same school?

You will receive a voucher for each child to spend at the same supermarket.

Can I use the voucher on my mobile phone?

Yes, you can.
